Targets: free chlorine 3 ppm (4 for salt), pH 7.5, alkalinity 100 ppm, stabilizer 40 ppm (70 for salt). Change them below if your pool needs different numbers.

Change targets
Safety first. Add chemicals one at a time with the pump running, never mix them, and add them to water, not water to them. For acid, add about half the dose, wait 30 minutes and retest. Results are estimates; follow the label of your product.

Common dosing questions

How much liquid chlorine do I need to raise free chlorine by 1 ppm?

In 10,000 gallons, about 10.2 fl oz of 12.5% liquid chlorine or 12.8 fl oz of 10% liquid chlorine raises free chlorine by 1 ppm.

How much baking soda raises alkalinity?

About 1.4 lb of baking soda raises total alkalinity by 10 ppm in 10,000 gallons.

How much stabilizer (CYA) do I add?

About 13.3 oz of cyanuric acid raises stabilizer by 10 ppm in 10,000 gallons. It dissolves slowly, so retest after about a week.

How do I lower stabilizer?

Cyanuric acid does not break down in normal use. The usual way to lower it is to drain part of the water and refill with fresh water.
